America: Questions for the Nation I Love

hqdefault
“America the Beautiful”

America, my country,

“land that I love.”

I always have and always will love you.

I will live and die on your soil,

where my father and mother died.

However, as a rational, truth-seeking creature,

I have questions for you,

America,

seeking answers,

which are not readily forthcoming,

to many domestic tragedies:

America, a nation where

innocent, defenseless children

attend elementary school,

only to be murdered systematically.

America,

Are you beautiful right now?

America, a country where

teenagers attend high school,

only to be slaughtered methodically.

America,

Where is your “domestic tranquility” right now?

America, a democracy where

students and faculty

make it to their university classes,

only to never make it out of them alive again.

America,

Are there “liberty and justice” right now

for the victims of such injustices?

America, a place where

parents and their children

go to the theater,

enjoying their lives,

only to be massacred in it.

America, a nation where

families and friends attend a concert,

only to be assassinated at will.

America,

Are you a better nation right now?

America, a land in which

people of different faiths pray to God for

peace in their churches, synagogues and mosques,

only to be slaughtered by senseless acts of violence.

America,

Are you free to worship right now?

America, a society where

friends and family attempt to enjoy each other’s

company at a restaurant,

only be gunned down,

dying as innocent victims.

America,

Are your citizens safe right now?

America, a republic where

people go to shopping malls,

never to come out of them alive.

America,

Are you a better nation now?

America, a place where

parents shop for their children at Walmart,

only to murdered,

never seeing their children again.

America,

Are you beautiful now?

America, a democracy where

people are shot to death because of the color of their skin,

their race,

their ethnicity,

their gender,

their sexuality

and their religion.

America,

Are you “one nation” right now?

America, a nation that does much to fight terrorism abroad,

but does little to stop terrorism within its own borders.

America,

Are you safe now?

America, a nation where

elected officials lack civility, using “free speech” to incite

hatred for minorities,

the poor and refugees.

America,

What happened to Lady Liberty’s words —

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free”?

America, one of the most powerful nations on earth,

where so many people are “on edge,”

feeling insecure, fearful, anxious and depressed.

America,

Are you at peace right now?

Are you a better nation right now?

Are you beautiful right now?

America, my country,

“land that I love.”

I always have and always will love you.
