A Theme of Existentialism

Existentialism for Everyone

First principle of existentialism: You are what you choose to be.

Second principle of existentialism: Eternity begins for you in the hic et nunc, the “here-and-now,” the unrepeatable moment.

Third principle of existentialism: You are not determined by your genetic make-up. Rather, you are self-determining.

Fourth principle of existentialism: You are responsible for the choices you make.

Fifth principle of existentialism: You are no-thing instead of nothing.

Sixth principle of existentialism: You are not only a “human being” but also a “human becoming,” an “unfinished symphony” or incomplete project.

Seventh principle of existentialism: Your freedom without responsibility is irresponsible.

Eighth principle of existentialism: When you find a meaning to your life, you also find a reason to stay alive, to live.

Ninth principle of existentialism: You are one of a kind, a human subject, a non-repeatable, non-replaceable person.

Tenth principle of existentialism: Sooner or later, with or without warning, you will die and must learn to come to terms with that fact.

Existentialism, then, is not a “dead” philosophy of the past. Rather, it is “alive and well” today, because existentialism is about human existence, existing as a human being, a person. In that sense, existentialism is for everyone.
